Outcome of Rhinoplasty
Every year, more and more people are choosing to undergo rhinoplasty to improve the appearance of their nose. Also referred to as nose reshaping surgery, rhinoplasty can be used to change the shape and size of the nose, as well as correct breathing problems. A majority of rhinoplasty procedures are performed by cosmetic surgeons, though they can also be performed by appropriately trained ENT surgeons. Nose surgery is usually performed under general anaesthesia, and can last for a few hours, depending on the complexity of the case.
After rhinoplasty, a patient may experience some bruising and swelling, especially around the eyes. This could take a few weeks to fade away. During the initial few days of this period, the patient may have to wear a splint over their nose. After approximately three weeks, the swelling around the nose will settle to a level where most other people will not notice it.
If a patient is worried about people commenting on their new nose, they can consider changing their hairstyle, at the same time. Now, those people who think that the appearance of the patient has changed, will usually attribute their new look to their changed hairstyle. Patients should also anticipate their own reaction to the first sight of their new nose. It could take some time for the mind’s eye to adjust to your new appearance, and begin recognising the new face in the mirror as ‘you’.
Patients should also keep in mind that it may take a few months, for all of the post-rhinoplasty swelling to completely subside. There is no need to worry about minor problems with the shape of the nose, as they are usually expected to disappear within a few months. The nasal tip may also feel a bit numb, but this too will improve with time.
